In English spelling, letters make sound, show meaning, and save history. We only teach children about one of those jobs, and it makes the whole system seem insane.

Not only do we teach students a sounding out strategy that doesn’t help them spell, we ourselves have been taught a complex maze of spelling “rules” that simply do not hold up, especially when it comes to the most common words in English.
